Strengthening and
modernizing the National
Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI).
A plan to complete and sustain freshness of the National Address Database with full nationwide coverage of address points validated by 911 for open use to support a broad range of national interests and reduce duplicative government spending.
Ensuring that place-based
foundational geospatial data across
the nation continues to be developed,
supported, and maintained, adding a
critical element to data driven
decision making.
The National Geospatial Collaborative's (NGC) three major initiatives include:
The National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) Governance Pilots, co-led by directors Tim Johnson and Jonathan Duran, aim to demonstrate practical models for nationwide spatial data infrastructure coordination. These pilots, one pilot focused on protecting public lands and trails, in cooperation with OpenStreetMap and others, and the second pilot with an emphasis on underground infrastructure data are intended to test scalable frameworks for future NSDI governance.
The National Address Database (NAD) 2.0, co-led by directors Bill Johnson and Eric Kolb, focuses on enhancing the National Address Database through coordination, standardization, and improved participation. NAD 2.0 reflects NGC’s growing leadership in national data modernization efforts, bridging the gaps between federal, state, and local partners. At the 2025 National Association of State 911 Administrators (NASNA) meeting in Anaheim, CA, NGC delivered a presentation on the NAD 2.0 Initiative, highlighting its importance in enhancing the National Address Database to better support emergency response systems. The presentation sparked robust discussion among attendees, revealing strong overall support from the 911 community alongside concerns about data-sharing limitations and questions regarding the specific contents of NAD as well reinforcing the growing momentum to prioritize authoritative geospatial data for public safety.
The State-Level NSDI Building Block Assessment, co-led by Jenna Leveille and Richard Wade, is a strategic initiative to transform NSGIC’s Geospatial Maturity Assessment (GMA) into a nationally integrated, independently validated tool. Phase 1 will engage a third-party review to enhance the GMA’s credibility and sustainability, aligning it with federal frameworks like the FGDC and GDA. The initiative aims to strengthen confidence in state-level geospatial programs, improve benchmarking, and support long-term investment in a robust National Spatial Data Infrastructure.
Together, these initiatives underscore NGC’s growing influence in shaping national geospatial strategy through clarity, coordination, and collaboration.
